Food for thought

You arrive at a restaurant, you ask for a table, and you sit down. That is how a restaurant meal starts in many places of the world. However, what happens next, is going to be a whole new experience every time.

Everyone eats food, with very few exceptions. You start eating it when you are really young and never stop. However, what I love about it is that every single person does it slightly differently. Maybe you learned with your family to eat with a fork, or your culture uses your hands for every meal.

The cool thing about traveling to a new place, let’s say Lyon, is that you get to experience how the people eat there. That simple action says a lot. It tells you how they get their ingredients, how they treat them, what manners they have when they sit down, how many dishes they eat, what they do at the end of a meal… I could go on and on and on. Though what I find even cooler is that you don’t even have to go to a restaurant. You can take your lunch to a park

or have desert in the Jardin du Palais St Pierre, like I did today.

or make your own dish at home with stunning tomatoes, like I also did today.

For the past week, I have been going around the city, finding the best treats and meals, experiencing Lyonnaise cuisine, and at the same time, getting to know Lyonnaise culture. I could tell you what the experience was like, but there are no words I could say that capture the experience that it is to sit down at a restaurant in Lyon. The servers pour you wine, they ask you what three courses you’d like from the menu, and they proceed to bring you the best food you’ve had. Ever.

So go take a bite of food wherever you are, go experience what the culture is like.

Love,

Hugo
